Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google?
The short version
Most small businesses that don't show up on Google are missing one of two things: a claimed, filled-in Google Business Profile, or a real website Google can index. A Facebook page isn't enough for either — get those two things right and searches for what you do, in your area, start finding you.
If you've ever searched your own business name and found nothing — or found a competitor instead — you're not alone. It's one of the most common things we hear from small business owners in Richards Bay and around KwaZulu-Natal: "we've been open for years, why can't people find us on Google?"
The good news is it's rarely a mystery. Google can only show what it can find, and what it can trust. Most of the time, one of two things is missing.
1. You don't have a Google Business Profile (or it's not set up properly)
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your name, address, hours, phone number and reviews on the right-hand side of search results and on Google Maps. It's the single biggest lever for "near me" searches — "plumber near me", "bakery Richards Bay" — and it's free to set up.
If you've never claimed yours, or you claimed it years ago and forgot about it, that's usually the first gap. An unclaimed listing, wrong hours, no photos, or zero reviews all tell Google (and customers) that the business isn't actively maintained — so it gets ranked below competitors who are.
2. You don't have a real website Google can index
This is the one people underestimate. A Facebook page or an Instagram bio is not a website as far as Google search is concerned — Google can't fully read or rank social media pages the way it ranks a proper site with your own domain, real pages, and text Google can crawl.
A website is also what makes the rest of your marketing credible. When someone finds your Google Business Profile and clicks through expecting a website and gets nothing, that's a trust signal lost — and a customer who moves on to the next result.
3. Your website exists, but it's slow or hard to use on a phone
If you do have a website already, the next question is whether it actually works for the way people search — which, for local businesses, is overwhelmingly on a phone. A site that takes ten seconds to load, or that requires pinching and zooming to read, gets penalised in Google's ranking and abandoned by visitors before it even finishes loading.
So what actually fixes it?
None of this needs to be complicated or expensive. It's the same groundwork I lay for every site I build: a fast, hand-coded website with the copywriting done properly, launched with your Google Business Profile in mind from day one.
- Claim and fully fill in your Google Business Profile — hours, category, photos, and a way to collect reviews.
- Get a real, mobile-first website with your business name, services and area clearly written out in actual text (not just images).
- Make sure your name, address and phone number match exactly between your website, your Google listing, and anywhere else you're listed online.
- Keep both up to date — a listing or site that hasn't changed in three years reads as abandoned to both Google and customers.
